3 essential pieces of cycling safety gear

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2024 | Personal Injury |

Cycling is becoming extremely popular. It’s a cheap and efficient way to get around. Plus, it keeps you healthy and saves the environment. That being said, cycling has its drawbacks.

Cyclists are not afforded the same level of physical protection as those in cars and other vehicles. There is no protective shell around cyclists, which is why safety gear is so important. Outlined below are some of the most essential pieces of cycling safety equipment

1. Helmets

Helmets are the most obvious form of cycling safety equipment. However, many people don’t wear them and it is not a legal requirement for adults to wear a helmet in Indiana. However, studies indicate that a helmet drastically reduces the risk of a cyclist suffering fatal injuries during an accident.

2. Reflective equipment

Being seen is everything in cycling safety. Even during the daytime, cyclists should utilize reflective equipment. This includes having reflective lights fitted on the bike, wearing bright clothing and even inserting reflective strips on the bicycle frame.

3. Utilizing technology

Technology has progressed dramatically in recent years. Many cyclists are now utilizing helmet cams to keep themselves safe. These cameras can be attached to the helmet, and they can record your journeys. Should something happen, such as a driver acting aggressively or recklessly, it can all be recorded to hand over to the authorities.

Technology and safety equipment can protect you somewhat as a cyclist, but it can’t eliminate all risks. Sadly, cyclists usually come off worst in terms of physical injuries after an accident. If you were injured due to negligence, then there are legal options available. Seeking guidance will give you further insight into personal injury law.
