Avoid a fall at the mall this holiday season

On Behalf of | Nov 15, 2021 | Personal Injury |

As the end of the year approaches, you may find yourself with errands to finish and inclement weather in the forecast. No matter where you prefer to purchase your holiday gifts in South Bend, safe practices can help protect you from a fall injury at a mall or shopping center.

Keep these tips in mind when out and about in snow, sleet and ice this December.

Stay aware of your surroundings

When in the parking lot or on the sidewalk, steer clear of slick surfaces if possible. When you get inside the store, continue to step carefully. Look out for cones, tape or hazard signs placed to warn customers about slippery sections of the floor. Keep your phone and other items in your pocket or bag.

Wear the right shoes

Avoid going to the store in shoes without enough traction. Leave the heels at home and opt for boots or sneakers with rubber soles. If you use a device such as a cane or a walker, add ice grips to keep it from sliding.

Walk carefully

Even if a surface looks safe, it could hide black ice that can cause a fall. Step carefully and do not run or rush. If you cannot avoid treading on slick areas, walk slowly with a wide stance. Be especially cautious when entering or leaving your vehicle.

While some falls only cause minor scrapes, others can result in broken bones, impacted mobility or even traumatic brain injuries. If negligence by store or property owners contributed to the accident, you may be able to sue for medical bills and other legal damages.
