Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
A brain injury or traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by trauma to the head. This blow often causes the normal functioning of the brain to be disrupted. Injuries to the head affect different people in different ways. The same force can cause a mild injury in one person, or a severe, disabling injury to another person. TBI's are easily one of the most serious and complicated injuries that arise from a traumatic event. Every year, thousands of deaths result from head injuries. Millions of people suffer from permanent disability as a result of a brain injury which they have suffered. Most head injuries are minor, however, when a brain injury does occur, even an injury characterized by your doctor as minor, serious problems can arise. Common causes of head injuries include traffic accidents, falls, industrial/occupational accidents, physical assaults, and accidents in the home.
Traumatic brain injuries can be serious and debilitating. Sometimes the signs and symptoms of a traumatic brain injury can be subtle. Symptoms may not appear until days or weeks following the injury. Some common symptoms of a TBI are headaches or neck pain, difficulty remembering, concentrating, or making decisions, slowness in thinking, speaking, and reading, getting easily confused, feeling tired, having no energy or motivation, mood changes, changes in sleep patterns, light-headedness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and ringing in the ears.
Persons who sustain a severe brain injury often have neurological and cognitive deficits as well as problems with physical functioning, and may require long-term or lifelong help to perform activities of daily living. Even persons who have suffered a mild head injury may have permanent deficits which make it impossible for them to return to their previous lifestyle and normal activities. Extensive research has confirmed that it can be very difficult for head injury victims to return to normal family or community life.
Each year in the United States, an estimated 2 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries. Approximately 1 million are treated and released from hospital emergency departments, and 230,000 Americans are hospitalized as a result of a traumatic brain injury. Every year 80,000 Americans experience the onset of long-term disability as a result of sustaining a traumatic brain injury, and more than 50,000 people die each year as a result of a traumatic brain injury.
Immediately following a traumatic brain injury, the victim is normally treated in a hospital setting. The patient will usually be treated by a neurologist and/or a neurosurgeon. Before being released from the hospital, the patient will be given physical and psychological examinations. After being discharged, the patient will likely undergo a regimen of extensive rehabilitation involving physical therapy, occupational therapy, visual therapy, and cognitive remediation. The hospital stay and rehabilitation are often lengthy, painful, and expensive.
